Session 1
"Four hobgoblins walk into a bar..."

Preface:

Hello everyone. I’m still learning how to use Obsidian Portal, so bear with me if anything looks wonky. I’m going to try to create logs for all of the sessions so that everyone can keep up with past plot points and how they tie into the overall story arc. Fortunately my experience point log is broken up by session, so translating that into a blog is fairly straightforward. In some cases I’ve pasted the box text from the module into the session notes.

Session 1:

“The gentle hubbub of an evening at the Antler and Thistle tavern is shattered by the crack of the front door flying off its hinges to land amid the nearest tables. Four hobgoblins rush into the bar, swords outstretched to skewer the nearest bar patrons. “For Sinruth! For the Hand!” they cry.”

The party was spending a quiet evening in the town of Brindol when hobgoblins attacked. After saving the tavern, the party moved out into the street to see what was going on.

“As you’ve been talking to the guards, you’ve been hearing shouts in the distance. But now those shouts are a lot closer, and a throng of townsfolk comes running around the street corner to the north. They’re fleeing a curious sight: a full-grown ogre pulling a wagon by a yoke around its waist. The ogre holds a cask in one hand and a massive club in the other. Riding atop the wagon are two hobgoblins with bows.”

The party killed the ogre and managed to capture one of the hobgoblins. After a brief interrogation the party turned the hobgoblin over to the town guard and decided to rest for the night. The following morning the party found themselves summoned to a meeting with Councilmember Eoffram Troyas. After a short interview Eoffram decided to hire the party to rescue seven townsfolk that were captured by the hobgoblins. In addition, they are asked to recover some stolen items if possible.

The party decided to interrogate the captured hobgoblin further. As a result of the interrogation they learned that Sinruth, the hobgoblin leader, was trying to recreate the Red Hand horde that menaced Brindol years ago. More importantly, they also learned that Sinruth was using the catacombs under the ruins of Castle Rivenroar as a base for now.

After a difficult 8-hour hike the party arrived at the ruins of Castle Rivenroar and found the entrance to the catacombs. After taking care of the entrance guards, the party began to explore the catacombs. The first room they came to contained an evistro (carnage demon) trapped inside an invisible cage. The party began to approach the demon cautiously, and as they did so a wererat stepped around a corner and said “I release you, crypt guardian!”

The encounter with the demon and wererats was not resolved until the following session. Each party member received 496 experience points during session 1.

Session 2
Dwarf Rescue

Since I’ve been having trouble finding time to update this, I’ve decided just to hit the main plot points and kill logs.

Plot Recap:

The party rescues Adronsius, the dwarf alchemist, who gives them some information about where other prisoners might be.

Sinruth Bites the Dust

Plot Recap:

  • The party rescues Sertanian, the castellan of the Hall of Great Valor.
  • Steve switches characters. (I don’t remember the details. I think both characters were Shadar-kai brothers.)
  • The party leaves Rivenroar to camp in the swamp for the night and gains level 2.
  • The party finds the corpse of Kartenix, the Brindol guard captain.
  • The party rescues Jalissa, an acolyte of Ioun. Jalissa takes a liking to Marius Decius.
  • The party stumbles upon the leader of the Hobgoblins, Sinruth, and slays him!
  • The party finds a note to Sinruth from someone called “The Emissary”.
  • The party rescues Thurann, the 8-year-old son of the guard captain.

The Undead Problem

  • The party spends another night in the swamp to regain strength.

Session 5
Back to Brindol and Off to Overlook

Plot Recap:

  • The party rescues Mirtala the cook, who is nearly catatonic.
  • The party rescues Zerriksa, the crone, who is trapped in a magic circle. She is very critical of the party for how long it took to rescue her.
  • Having recovered all of the relics and accounted for all of the captives, the party hikes back to Brindol and collects their reward. (End of Module 1)
  • The party travels to the city of Overlook and encounters Orcs along the way. (Start of Module 2)
  • The party gets level 3 after spending the night in Overlook.

Off to the Monastery

Plot recap:

  • The party volunteers to go to the Monastery of the Sundered Chain to warn the monks of the approaching Orcish army.
  • Ellen’s cleric wanders off with the militia defenders and is replaced by a Halfling rogue.
  • Steve’s Shadar-kai also wanders off and is replaced by a Changeling bard.
  • Alex’s barbarian begins an extended vacation.
  • Chris’s warlock also wanders off for a while.
  • The newly reformed party hikes up the Stonehome Mountains to the monastery.
  • The Orcs have already taken the monastery and much Orcish death ensues.

Session 7
Kalad is Rescued

Plot Recap:

  • The party discovers the secret tunnels under the monastery that allowed the Orcs to attack from below.
  • The last surviving Dwarven monk, Kalad, has managed to collapse the tunnels and block off Orc reinforcements.
  • The party manages to rescue Kalad from the clutches of the remaining Orcs.
  • The party then returns to Overlook with Kalad and rests for the night.
  • The party heads to The Vents with Kalad to make sure that the Farstriders were successful in blocking off the rest of the tunnels under the Stonehome Mountains. The party finds the Farstrider’s horses outside The Vents, but no sign that they ever came back out.

Troll Go Boom

Plot Recap:

  • Finding that the Farstriders are dead, the party heads deeper into the Dwarven tunnels. If the party can seal The Nexus, the Orcs will be unable to use the tunnels to attack Elsir Vale.

Session 9
The Nexus is Sealed

Plot Recap:

  • The party reaches and seals The Nexus, dooming the Orc invasion to failure.
  • The party returns to Overlook and is rewarded with 1,000gp each. (End of Module 2)
  • After a much overdue rest the party finally gets level 4.
  • While shopping in Overlook the party is ambushed by a group looking for the brass key. The group is apparently working for someone named Modra. (Start of Module 3)

Session 10
Overlook City Crawl

Plot Recap:

  • The party searches for clues about Modra and why he might want the brass key. They uncover information that Modra might have been supplying weapons to the Orcs. The party also discovers that the group that attacked them was part of an organization known as the Lost Ones.
  • Along the way they meet Reniss, a half-elf ranger. Reniss is seeking to avenge the death of her sister Jen, who was a member of the Farstriders.
  • The party and Reniss wind up in hidden tunnels below a poorhouse called The Happy Beggar.
